John Szarkowski passed away Saturday due to complications of a stroke. Mr. Szarkowski, born in Wisconsin was quite possibly the most influential advocate of photography in history. He was in Milwaukee in the spring of 2006 with a show of his work at the Milwaukee Art Museum. I was lucky, and very nervous at the time to chat with him for about 10-15 minutes with curator Lisa Hostetler of MAM. Look him up online and you will understand was I was a little nervous, but his Wisconsin charm and sense of humor soon made me feel at ease. I have a humorous story about how he signed my book, and it is one of my most cherished memories.
